FAQ: Online Privacy Practices
The following questions and answers address specific issues associated with the Foundation's online privacy practices.
What information does the Foundation gather by tracking the use of its Web pages?
The Foundation does not track the personal information (such as name and email address) of visitors to its web sites unless site visitors voluntarily enter their contact information. If someone volunteers to provide personal information to make an online gift or change an address, the Foundation will securely record that information for its business needs. The Foundation tracks how many visits the site receives, the average time users spend per page, and other general, non-personally identifiable information about how visitors are using the site.
If a gift to benefit the University of Iowa is made online, how will the Foundation use that information?
The Foundation Web site has one area where visitors can voluntarily enter their contact information and make a contribution — the "Make an Online Gift" section where a donor may designate a credit card gift. The Foundation enters the information provided—excluding credit card number—into its secure donor database to maintain gift history or change of name and/or address record.
Is it safe to make a gift online?
Yes. The "Make an Online Gift" page is a secure page that encrypts private information, including credit card numbers, for donor protection.
Does The University of Iowa Foundation share or sell the information it gathers online?
To respect privacy, the Foundation does not sell any of its donor or alumni lists. Personal and financial information pertaining to donors is not publicly disclosed by the Foundation except as may be required by law. Certain donor information may be disclosed to limited third parties only when reasonably necessary to further its mission, and then only after appropriate safeguards are taken to preserve confidentiality (e.g., donor addresses to a printing company). Please see the Foundation's Policy on Safeguarding and Disclosure of Foundation Information.
