Transformation for Tomorrow: The Campaign for the
University of Iowa College of Dentistry Building

Ranked as one of the nation’s top dental schools, and having recently celebrated its 125th anniversary, the UI College of Dentistry has reached a remarkable moment in its history.  And that invites the question: As stewards of one of the nation’s most distinguished dental schools, what can be done by alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends to ensure the college’s continuing excellence?

To sustain and build on its rich heritage, the college needs a physical facility that can accommodate the art and science of dentistry in the 21st century.  The current Dental Science Building has undergone periodic changes, the largest of which was creating the Simulation Clinic in 1995, and now a more comprehensive approach must be taken.  The dental profession has seen tremendous advances in technology and teaching methods, as well as changes in patient needs and expansion in the scope of research. These profound changes cannot be accommodated in our current building.

The college must adapt and expand its facility to provide an environment to reflect its world-class programs. If the college is to continue to grow and succeed—and attract top faculty, students, and research grants—these much-needed renovations, which will take several years to accomplish, need to be initiated now.  Alumni and friends have a unique opportunity to help make a profound difference today that will help set the course for the future excellence of the college.

David Johnsen - Dean, UI College of Dentistry

"When I meet with today's students, I tell them, 'You are never going to have to explain your Iowa dental degree anywhere in the world—it will always speak for itself.' This campaign will help ensure that future deans will be able to make the same statement to students about the quality of a UI dentistry education."
