About International Programs
International Programs (IP) at The University of Iowa provides leadership and support for internationally-oriented teaching, research, creative work, and community engagement. Our mission is to:
- Internationalize the undergraduate, graduate, and professional curricula across departments and disciplines
- Promote international scholarship and educational exchange
- Promote international scholarship, educational exchange, and linkages with individuals and institutions abroad
- Enhance the Iowa experience for international students and scholars
- Further globally-oriented knowledge and activities across the state and in partnership with the state of Iowa
- Help create a community and society responsive to the increasingly global needs and obligations of citizenship
Through IP, UI students can pursue a Master’s Degree in International Studies as well as specialized certificates in global and regional studies and a doctorate in second-language acquisition. Students can enhance their educational experience by taking advantage of opportunities to study, work, volunteer, and do service learning abroad. IP also serves as a valuable resource for the ever-growing number of international students and offers assistance to faculty and students searching for scholarships and grants to pursue international research and study.
IP supports 14 nationally-renowned academic programs and centers such as the Confucius Institute, Global Health Studies Program, UI Center for Human Rights, Center for Asian and Pacific Studies and African Studies Program, all of which offer collaborative opportunities for faculty. And, extending our reach even further, the UI sustains international research and training through agreements with nearly 150 universities and research institutes worldwide.
Through a dynamic outreach program, IP supports teacher training, public lectures, presentations, visits to K-12 classrooms and other initiatives that increase global awareness. IP’s public programs offer opportunities throughout the year to hear experts discuss international issues and—through radio, television, the Internet and iTunes—the live, monthly program WorldCanvass examines the compelling people, projects and programs of IP and the UI .
Private support has been instrumental in IP's success, including many annual gifts of all sizes from alumni and friends and a $6 million scholarship gift from the late Ann U. Morse of Fort Myers, Florida. Ongoing support is crucial to advancing IP's mission. Click here to learn more about online giving opportunities and to make a gift.
