In the midst of her major Midwest college tour, Jessica Orseno came across an interview with an alumna of The University of Iowa in her local newspaper. In response to being asked what her favorite city was, the interviewee said, “Iowa City. Hands down.”

This sparked an interest in Jessica. When she subsequently visited Iowa City, Jessica felt comfortable immediately. The compactness of such a large university, positive interactions with current University of Iowa Henry B. Tippie College of Business students and the opportunity for several scholarships sealed Jessica’s decision to become a Hawkeye.

As an accounting student from Homer Glen, Ill., set to graduate in May 2011, Jessica has had the chance to spend two weeks studying international environmental business in London with fellow Tippie College of Business students and has been involved with Beta Alpha Psi, an honors accounting fraternity that provides professional development for students while emphasizing community service.

In addition to these opportunities, private funding supports and retains exceptional faculty members who have pushed Jessica beyond getting good grades to developing an intuition for accounting concepts and interacting with the management teams of local businesses.

Jessica is grateful for the many teachers at Iowa who have helped her excel, and for the gifts from generous individuals that support them and enhance the university experience. “Private gifts allow students to advance beyond what the classroom can offer, making us more marketable, involved and well-rounded people,” says Jessica.
