About the University of Iowa Museum of Art

It is more than a Museum of Art—it is a museum about art!

The University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) provides unique and stimulating opportunities to explore the role of the visual arts in human life.

Comprised of more than 12,000 works, the museum’s collection includes paintings by Jackson Pollack, Pablo Picasso, Max Beckman, and Grant Wood, and one of the nation’s finest collections of African Art.

The Museum presents exhibitions of international importance in the art world.  VOOM Portraits, a collection of video portraits by artist Robert Wilson, attracted more than 18,000 visitors in the spring of 2008.

Although the flood of June 2008 caused significant damage to our building, and the collection is currently housed in Chicago until a new facility becomes available, the museum is as committed as ever to its mission and continues to offer:

  • Groundbreaking special exhibitions
  • Educational programming for hundreds of K-12 Iowa students each year
  • Opportunities for UI art students and faculty, including sponsoring exhibits of student and faculty works and offering access to works in the UIMA collection for learning purposes
  • Community events including festive exhibit openings, lectures, and readings
